Something Dada's Going East Side

Something Dada is movin' on up (movin' on up!) to the East Side (movin' on up!)... to Cleveland Heights, to be precise! We will be performing the last two Thursdays in May and the last two Thursdays in June, at The Historic Centrum Theater at 2781 Euclid Hts. Blvd. in Cleveland Heights.

We're incredibly excited to bring our hilarity to the Centrum, which has been an important part of Cleveland culture for even longer than we have (but 14 years is nothing to sneeze at, so Gesundheit!), and we'd love for you to join us. We will be performing at 8:30 on Thursdays May 22 and May 29, and Thursdays June 19 and 26. These will be full, 90-minute shows, completely based on audience suggestions as always. Tickets are $10 general admission and $8 for students and seniors. Something Dada Gives Back to American Idol

Something Dada is concerned. As we're quite sure you're aware, American Idol's ratings have been slipping recently. We know that this has been happening since Sanjaya got eliminated. No Sanajaya, no Sanjaya hair, no happiness in the world, no ratings for American Idol. Basic Socratic logic. However, we also know that they can't make Sanjaya an Idol Emeritus, with a free admission to each season. So we have devised some alternative enhancements that Idol could use to improve its ratings:

- Underwater singing - viewers have to try and figure out what songs the contestants are singing while they're underwater. Bonus points to anyone who can finish all of Bohemian Rhapsody without coming up for air.

- Better themes - rather than the current crop of garbage (Andrew Lloyd Weber? Really?), try some truly challenging themes. We're thinking a Thrash Metal or Speed Rap week.

- Flaming Arrows - let's face it, anything's more interesting when the contestants are being shot at with flaming arrows.

- Make 'Em Ups - the singers are given a theme and a song style, and have to make up their own songs

Nobody would try that, would they? Just get an idea and have to completely make stuff up right on the spot? We know it's got the Fox execs quaking in their boots, but you can see folks who have that sort of courage EVERY SINGLE WEEK! Something Dada Celebrates...ERASERS!

Yes, April 15th was Tax Day. And so Something Dada could be going that route, making tax man jokes, offering rebate discounts, telling you to spend your hard earned rebate with us, etc. However, that would really make us no better than used car dealers, and our tickets are already a rock-bottom ten bucks - whaddya want?

We KNOW what you want. What YOU want is something different, something original - a celebration of Rubber Eraser day! That's right, Rubber Eraser day was April 15th, as you probably did not know. Something Dada Welcomes...SPRING!

Ladies and gentlemen, pay no attention to the snow on the ground or the bite in the air, spring has sprung, per both the calendar and common sense. March 21 has come and gone, so we are officially in the season of hope. The signs of spring go far beyond the Solstice. Baseball has started...even if it is in Japan. Once again the groundskeepers will be bringing their snowblowers to the corner of Carnegie and East 9th. The crocuses are peeking their heads out...only to have them crushed by a mound of wet snow. The sun is staying out later, to illuminate the craterous potholes dotting the streets of Cuyahoga County and its neighbors.

All of this is to say, once again we Clevelanders will soon be rewarded for braving the long, grey winter with the those glorious two weeks we call Spring, the time between the slush and the sunburn, between the icy streets and the nasty skeeters. So come down and celebrate the dawning of this new and fantastic time of legend with Something Dada this weekend. We'll have 8 PM shows Friday and Saturday, or stay out and enjoy the late sunshine and check us out at 10:30 PM on Saturday night. One way or the other, we'll greet the teasing 50 degree weather with laughter and fun.

As you are probably aware, there are two major religious holidays this weekend: Easter and the first two round of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Many people have asked, and we want to assure you that Something Dada WILL be having shows this weekend. So, if you need a break from relatives, basketball, or both, come on down to Dada this weekend, with shows Friday at 8 and Saturday at 8 and 10:30. If you're using it to earn points from a significant other who's sick of you sitting on the couch watching basketball for 48 straight hours, we'll be happy to chat brackets with you afterwards. Something Dada Celebrates St. Joseph's Day

Yeah, yeah, we know, St. Patrick's Day is coming. However, since the 17th falls on a Monday, and St. Patrick's Day is on Friday, when we're closed for a cool gallery opening at the Wooltex ("Sentiment, Apathy, or Somewhere In Between" - http://www.wooltexgallery.com/exhibitiondetail.php?section=exhibition&id=16), we're going to be celebrating *wait for it*: St. Joseph's Day!

Yes, it's St. Joseph's Day, a celebration of the Mary's husband, and an official holiday in Malta (we couldn't make that up - well, we could, but we didn't). Usually falling on the 19th of January, but moved, along with St. Patrick's Day (over which it took precedence, by the way), to avoid Holy Week this year, St. Joseph's Day is this Saturday. So come down and celebrate with something Dada! Wear whatever color you most associate with St. Joseph! Pretend to be some nationality you aren't! Computers are evil. Computers crash when you're in the middle of writing things. Computers don't force you to save, or auto-save in the background when you really need it. Computers don't know when you're working on your magnum opus, or the most important paper you're going to write in your college career, and that you don't have time to do something as silly as hit CTRL-S. Computers don't care about your job or your grades or your sanity. Computers just act like they're really helpful and make your life seem so much easier until they ruin everything and make everything infinitely more difficult.

Something Dada's New Holiday Proposals

Another President's Day has come and gone, with those without the day off envying those with the day off, and nobody but mattress stores and car dealerships really giving a crud. Let's face it, there are certain national holidays which have served their purpose, and no longer belong on the calendar. In their place, Something Dada is glad to present our list of proposed new National (or regional) Holidays:

- Election Day - if you want people to vote, mandate that EVERYBODY, from the WalMart greeters to Bill Gates, gets a paid day off.
- NCAA Tournament 1st Thursday - Make people take a vacation day Friday if they must, but let's face it, nobody's paying attention at work anyway when their bracket is still pristine
- Sledding Day (varies from state to state) - To be set one week in advance by the AMA, this is the first day of winter when it is determined there will be enough snow to sled. For states that never get that much snow - consider it payback for having to shovel our cars out.
- T-Shirt Day - Again, set by the AMA one week in advance, this is the first day of the year the temperature will be warm enough to reasonably wear a t-shirt. Set by the AMA to protect those who have been driven crazy by 6 months of cold, gray sleet and think any temperature above 40 is warm enough for a t-shirt.

Something Dada - Fighting the Great Groundhog Day Hoax

What in the name of Sonny and Cher is going on here? Like every other patriotic American, we got up on February 2nd to learn the future from a groundhog, specifically The Groundhog in Chief, Punxsutawney Phil. He said there would be 6 more weeks of winter. We bought blankets. all was well with the world.

So what happened this morning, a mere three days after our porcine prognosticator issued his edict? 50 freaking degrees, THAT'S what happened! How are we supposed to trust anything now? Up is down, left is right, Britney's sane!

Then it dawned on us: it's a hoax. A hoax perpetrated by the money-grubbing citizens of Punxsutawney, looking to make a cheap buck off the backs of the Believers. Well, we're not going to take it anymore! We're organizing a boycott. Help us out, and take the following steps:

- No more Punxsutawney Phil merch - no dolls, slippers, totem poles, golf club covers, custom-painted BMWs - none of it

- Never watch the movie of the same name again. We've gotten word that 50 cents of each rental goes directly to central Pennsylvania

- Never do the same thing twice...you're just falling into their trap.

To follow this last note, make SURE that you attend at least one Something Dada show this weekend. Since each show is completely different, based on what you, the audience provide, you will never have to worry about seeing the same show twice, thus avoiding supporting the Punxsutawney Profiteers. Take your pick of any and all of the Friday show or either Saturday show, but get down to Dada and help us stop the fraud!

Something Dada recently heard Laura Lorson pontificate on the existence of JanuFeb (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=18316994), and we couldn't agree more. JanuFeb is the most depressing time of the year, the end of January and the beginning of February. The joy of the holidays is far in the rear view, brought to mind only by the arrival of credit card bills. The sun and flowers of spring seem miles away, completely obscured by the gray gloom that has settled over the land. If the weather isn't freezing, it's raining. If it's not raining, it's sleeting. The one thing it sure as heck isn't is sunny. You're pretty sure the sun has decided to abandon its own solar system, heading for warmer, more welcoming climes.

Well, gosh darn it, Something Dada isn't taking JanuFeb lying down! No siree BOB! The only known cure for JanuFebitis is laughter, and we've got that in spades. After taking off half a weekend last week, we are back, refreshed, and ready to shine the sunlight of laughter into your gloomy, JanuFeb-ridden mind, reminding you what fun is, and that spring will, in all probability, show up again this year (even if only for the two weeks it is alotted in northeast Ohio).

Something Dada Asks: Wanna Play?

Are you physically unable to give a straight answer? Can you look at a complete stranger and make up a full-on name, history, list of likes, dislikes, and most recent adventure? Do friends fear taking you to something serious because you will inevitably make them crack up?

Then maybe you have what it takes to be a member of Something Dada, Cleveland's premiere improvisational comedy troupe. We have been entertaining Clevelanders for 13 years, and we're holding open auditions, looking to add to our dynamic cast.

Formal training of any sort is not required. All you need is a willingness to play, have fun, take chances, and work with others to make a whole bunch of funny. Please come to auditions in comfortable clothing and shoes, and be ready to jump right in.

Auditions will be held on Monday, January 28 at 7:30 PM in the Something Dada performance space at the Wooltex Gallery at The Tower Press Building, 1900 Superior Ave., Cleveland. Free parking is available on street and behind the gallery.

For those of you hoping for a dose of Dada to cheer up your weekend this Friday night, you will have to wait. There will be no Dada show Friday night. Don't despair! (We heard you despairing.) Secondly, there will be a Lissa Bockrath exhibition opening at the Wooltex Gallery Friday night from 5:30 - 8:30 PM, so you can come down and check out some very cool art.

This show marks the return of Lissa Bockrath to the Cleveland art scene. After a three year hiatus since closing her successful Little Italy gallery, Bockrath is showcasing her latest body of artwork at The Wooltex Gallery. Something Dada Gives Thanks and Takes Names

Fortunately for everyone out there, Something Dada will NOT be doing Thanksgiving dinner this year. You can thank us later for saving you from a couple slices of Oscar Mayer, a spoonful of instant mashed potatoes, and a quivering can of cranberry sauce.

While we won't be cooking, however, we will be giving thanks. Giving thanks to the Tower Press building for being such wonderful hosts to our merriment this past year. Thanks to Artefino for the delicious coffees, teas and treats. Thanks to Becky's for helping us quench our thirsts, and fill our bellies with those fantastic burger and pierogies. Most of all, though, thanks to you, our audience, the people who keep us alive, spread the Dada gospel, and who's laughs make the whole dang thing worthwhile. Thank you, thank you, thank you. We literally couldn't do it without you, and look forward to giving you many more years of laughter, one suggestion at a time.

Something Dada says Thirteen Thanks

Well, it's all over but the thanking. Another amazing Dada Anniversary has passed, and Dada the 13th was a rousing success. Food was eaten, drinks were drunk, and a hilarious show was put on. As a capper, we got to see the last part of the Indians' triumph in Boston over at Becky's. And none of this would have been possible without the support of all the people and businesses that supported live, local theater this year:

September is here, and that means one thing: APPLES! (Well, it means lots of things, but we're focusing on apples, OK?) Apples are everywhere this time of year, from apple picking trips, to apple pies, to putting fresh-picked apples on the road to see 'em get run over (man we miss 3rd grade). - 7500 varieties of apples are grown throughout the world

- In colonial time apples were called winter banana or melt-in-the-mouth.

- Like bifocals and turkeys, apples were invented by Benjamin Franklin

- If you took all the apples consumed every year and stacked them on top of each other, the price of apples would skyrocket because you would cause a major shortage.

- "Hard" apple cider is so named because that's how it makes you fall down if you drink too much.

- The "Delicious" variety of apples is the most commonly grown in the U.S. The "Disgusting" variety is seldom grown outside of Wyoming.

- The average apple weighs 17% less than a large apple

- "Granny Smith" apples were named after Jim Smith's grandmother, "Granny," so named because of her mispronunciation of the word "cranny" when eating English muffins.

- If you were to make an entire house out of apples, you'd have to make a new house pretty soon, because the apples would rot. You could varnish them, but we don't know how well that would work. As the little pigs taught us, bricks are probably a better choice.

Something Dada Celebrates Labor Day

Oh Labor Day, how quickly you come. It seems like only yesterday we were writing about how it was finally getting warm, and now Labor Day comes, bringing with it school zones and school buses slowing our commute, and no doubt soon those horrid words, "possible frost".

For now, though, the weather is still steamy, they're still playing baseball, and the leaves are still (for the most part) green. Labor Day isn't, until Monday, after all. Happy Improv Days

Wow is August boring. Seriously, not only is it hot and muggy, but there are NO holidays in August. You basically go from the 4th of July through to Labor Day without anything to celebrate. Sure, those lucky folks in Texas get to celebrate Petroleum Day on the 27th, but what good is that to the rest of us?

So, as Uncle Joe used to always tell us when we were bored, make your own fun! (He also used to tell us that eating rubber bands would make us fly, but looking back, that's probably because it kept us busy for a while trying to chew the darn things.) Point being, Dada is hereby proclaiming this Friday AND Saturday, August 17th and 18th: IMPROV DAYS! That's right, a national celebration of making things up! Give it a shot! This weekend, concoct a crazy story about the faux historical event that happened at the big oak in the front yard. Give yourself a fantastical biography. Make up a breed for the dog. Order a drink with a ridiculous name, and tell the bartender exactly what's in it, and how you came up with it when you were avoiding spies deep in the Russian tundra.

Something Dada at the Coventry Street Arts Fair

At Something Dada, we're all about fairness. We give our audience a hand in creating our show, we offer shows Friday AND Saturday nights, we price our shows at only $10...we want everything to be fair and on the level. The Dog Days of Dada

With August come the dog days of summer. In honor of such, be sure to enjoy the hot weather appropriately. To wit...

- Be sure to sprawl out wherever is the least convenient for people around you.
- Pant. A lot.
- Poop outside (but be sure to pick it up afterwards).
- Sniff everything. Twice, if necessary.
- Greet people by sniffing or licking them.
- Howl.
- Drink by lapping at beverages with your tongue (watch out for splashback with hot coffee).
- If you can clean yourself with your tongue, go to town!

Last but not least, in order to make this the doggiest days of summer yet, Something Dada wants to teach you a few tricks. "Come" down to a Dada Show this weekend. Don't "play dead," just "fetch" your friends and "roll over" to our theater at the Tower Press Building. Something Dada - Mythbusters

We at Something Dada are tired of the misinformation floating around the world. As such, we offer the following myths, busted for your convenience and edification:

MYTH: The average human head weighs 8 pounds.
FACT: Average adult human head weighs 12 pounds (with the average brain weighing about 3 pounds). Probably less for Tom Cruise as the aliens have slowly been siphoning parts of it off.

MYTH: The Eskimos have 57 words for snow.
FACT: There are multiple "Eskimo" languages, and each of them have multiple words for snow, just like English (blizzard, flurry, dusting, etc.). However, the Pittsburgh language does have 183 words for "mustache".

MYTH: A cat will always land on its feet.
FACT: This depends on the height of the drop, the angle of the cat on initial toss, and if the cat does indeed have feet. One definite fact, though: a cat dropped from the top of the Empire State Building WILL pierce a human skull.

MYTH: A piece of bread with butter on it will always land butter-side down.
FACT: This is generally true, but not if you spread another substance (peanut butter, jelly, mayo, etc.) on the other side. In fact, researchers in Finland are currently studying the repulsive qualities of just such a piece of "double-spread" (technical term) bread to create a super-train so they can leave Finland.

MYTH: Something has to be pre-written to be funny.

Customer Service
Starter - That really loud lady at Wendy's. Sure, they give you a microphone to communicate your order back to the grill folks, but why bother using it when you can just screech loud enough for the folks next door to hear?

Reserve - The guy at the sandwich shop who had to put out his blunt before he could come serve you.

Traffic Barrels
Starter - The ones surrounding the mysterious hole in the middle of the street. Rather than, I don't know, filling the hole, just put 4 barrels unannounced right in the middle of the street.

Reserves - The ones that come up 5 feet before the lane closes while you're hurtling down the highway at 75 MPH.

Dog
Starter - The one that thinks 2 AM Wednesday is a great time to start barking and howling for hours on end.

Reserve - The one whose owner thinks that poop bags are for everyone else, and leaves a present in the middle of your lawn.

Traffic Cop
Starter - The one who hasn't figured out clear hand signals yet, so looks like he's waving people into a 4-way accident, then glowers at you because you aren't going fast enough.

Reserve - The one right over the crest of the hill looking for anyone going 7 miles over the speed limit.

Invention

Something Dada Wishes You a Happy 4th Of July

Something Dada would like to wish you a very happy 4th of July, and remind you that it does mean more than beer, barbeque, and fireworks (though beer, barbeque, and fireworks are awful nice). No matter what differences you may have with the country, its leaders, and its policies, we are fortunate enough where we can have those differences freely. We can do an impression of the President on our stage, and not worry that the secret police will show up the next day and take us away. We can have an election where it has to be settled in court, and it doesn't end in a military coup. In short, for all its flaws (and there are plenty), we are pretty lucky to live where we do. So take a moment after watching someone scarf down 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes and count your blessings, and remember that you often get the country you deserve.

(Oh, and remember that Something Dada will be celbrating our freedom to make stuff up all weekend, so come down and catch our shows.)

Free Somehting Dada Improv Workshop

This weekend, in addition to their regularly scheduled shows, Something Dada will be holding a free improvisational workshop this Saturday, June 30th, from 2:30 to 5:30 PM. Whether you're a seasoned actor looking for a brush up on the basics, or someone who's always thought "I could do that!' when watching a Dada show, this is your chance to take advantage of improvisational comedy training from Cleveland's premiere improvisational troupe. All participants will explore the basic concepts of Improv in a fun and playful setting, and every participant will receive complimentary pizza at Becky's Bar and Grill after the workshop, and a free ticket to a Something Dada performance that evening.

Dada Queen

As Queen Elizabeth toured the United States, it seemed like a pretty sweet gig being the Queen. You get to jet around on your own personal plane, you get sweet seats to the Kentucky Derby, you have a huge boat named after you. Basically, you'd think you had it made. After thinking about it for a while (we have too much free time), Something Dada realized that there are definitely some downsides to being Queen. Since we live to share knowledge, we thought we'd share with you the 10 worst things about being the Queen:

10 - You forget your sunglasses somewhere in Buckingham Palace, it's nearly impossible to find them.
9 - Huge hats are hard on the neck.
8 - People really, really care what you think of your in-laws.
7 - Forms are a real pain to fill out without a last name.
6 - You are never, ever, allowed to burp.
5 - Repetitive motion injury from constant royal waving.
4 - It's so hard to remember which keys go to which castle.
3 - The whole dang world can see the spinach left in your teeth.
2 - British teeth.
1 - Chants of "Queenie, Queenie, what a weenie" still burn.

See, life as a non-Royal seems pretty easy now, doesn't it? All the time, people come up to us and say "We'd love to come down to see Something Dada, but we need a special occasion!" First off, that's silly. Anyone can come to Something Dada anytime (well, only during our shows, but you know what we mean). However, some people insist on needing an occasion. Fortunately, there's a MILLION special events that merit a trip down to the Tower Press Building to see a Something Dada show. Unfortunately, we have neither time nor space to list all million, but we can give you a start on the list:

Something Dada Celebrates President's Day

Something Dada is as patriotic as the next improv troupe (well, unless the next improv troupe is "Improv About America for America By Americans," but they're mainly jingoistic more than patriotic). In that vein, and in honor of President's Day, we'd like to present the newest installment of Something Dada Introduces the Presidents. This week, Millard Fillmore. Some interesting MF facts:
- Served from 1850 - 1853
- He was a Whig (recently voted the 3rd coolest political party ever, behind the Bull Moose and the Know Nothings)
- He wasn't elected, but served as the unlucky 13th president. (Ironically, of course, it was more unlucky for the 12th President, Zachary Taylor, who died in office)
- His nickname: "The American Louis Philippe" (Who the heck was Louis Philippe? How much time for research do you think we have, you lazy bum? Go look it up yourself!)
- Inspired an ironically uninspired cartoon, Mallard Fillmore (Get it? He's a duck! Mallard! Millard! Get it?)
- He could fly! (Well, not really, but just curious if anyone would make it through 5 facts about Millard Fillmore)

Something Dada Unveils New Slogan

As Something Dada prepared for our re-lunch in our new space at the Tower Press building, we realized we had to reinvent ourselves. A new space meant a new logo, and a new logo meant a new slogan. "Never the Same Show Twice" had served us well, but was beginning to show its age (little ragged around the edges, had trouble keeping up with newer slogans, etc.). Since we didn't have the budget for some big fancy copywriter, we got together and brainstormed up a few ideas (the energy coming out of the Tower Press Building that night caused interference with the Plain Dealer's presses, which is why the color in the comics was off-line the next day). Here are some of the ideas that we came up with that didn't pass muster:

As you can see, our final choice, "All New. All Different. Like Always." was by far the best selection (though "Improv Without Pants" had a lot of support in certain quarters). Starting February 2nd, you can see our new slogan in action. Well, not really, since slogans just sort of sit there, but you can see Something Dada be all new, all different, like always. Something Dada Says Goodbye to the Bassa Vita

All good things must come to an end, and so it is with Dada's relationship with the Bassa Vita Lounge. We have had a wonderful time performing at the BV, and in honor of that, are going to have a blowout party on Thursday, the 28th at 9:30 PM. We're bringing out alumni members of Dada, along with the current cast, to rock the house one last time. They're going to be wiping funny off the walls. They're going to be finding funny in odd places when they clean three weeks from now. Suffice to say: there will be mad funny. So come down and share the joy, the tears, and the drink specials with Dada this Thursday, celebrating the end of the Bassa Vita chapter and the beginning of the Tower Press chapter starting in February (stay tune for more details).

That's right, Something Dada is painting the town red and green and blue and white two consecutive weeks at Bassa Vita Lounge below Bottom's Up on W 117th in Lakewood. First, on Thursday the 21st we're having our Goodbye to Hanukah celebration. As we start to run out of candles, we cram enough laughs for eight shows miraculously into one. Something Dada's Thanksgiving Survival Kit

Sorry, everybody, no Turkey Show for Dada this week. We’ll be taking Thanksgiving night off. However, we certainly don’t want to leave in the lurch, wandering through the desert of boredom searching for an oasis of entertainment in our absence. If it’s Thanksgiving night, there’s no Dada, you have the Time Warner crybabies not showing you the football game, and you can’t play another game of Scrabble without wanting to stick a drumstick in Uncle Fred’s eye, here are a few ideas for keeping yourself entertained:

- See how many Clementine peels you can stack on passed out Aunt Judy before she wakes up
- Four words: turkey carcass puppet show
- A stuffing sculpture contest, with extra points for whoever uses the cranberry sauce in the most disgusting way
- Tally up the scores from your Fantasy Dinner League, with points divvied up for who ate the most of each food, and bonuses for who went to the bathroom least, and whoever was first to undo their belt
- See who can prompt the most boring story from Grandpa (alternate bonus points for getting him to tell his war story of the house of ill repute and the pixie sticks before mom stops him)

A Dada Dozen Thank You

The food from ArteFino was delicious, Becky's was kind enough to provide beer and wine, and the Tower Press was looking dazzling, even in our space's unfinished state. Arcuri, and everyone walked away laughing from the fantastic Something Dada show.

The Dada Dozen - October 28th, The Tower Press Building

Time for a party! Something Dada will be holding a fund raising performance/benefit, The Dada Dozen, on October 28th with all proceeds going to the development of a new permanent performance venue in The Tower Press Building. The Dada Dozen will be a celebration of Dada’s twelfth anniversary, and celebrate Dada making the new Tower Press space their new permanent week-end home in early 2007. It will feature food, beverages, door prizes and a silent auction as well as a performance by Something Dada, including current and past cast members.

Now, the details:
WHERE – The Tower Press Building, 1900 Superior Avenue. The Tower Press Building has undergone a historic renovation and conversion into 80 contemporary one to three bedroom live/ work lofts, and Something Dada is very excited to be part of this wonderful building. There is free, off-street parking available. Yes, you read that correctly, free, off-street parking.

WHEN – Saturday, October 28th, starting at 8 PM.

HOW MUCH - Tickets are $30 each or 2 for $50. So make sure you bring a friend, or several dozen.

Something Dada Time Change - Ahead of the Curve

As many of you may know (actually, we'll be stunned if more than 5 of you know this), this coming October will be the first one where ALL of Indiana will have to set their clocks back. That right, as of April 2nd, 2006, all of Indiana, including the previously reticent western corners, all of Indiana was on Daylight Savings Time. The "Time Zone Selector" option for "Indiana (East)" is now out of date. The last DST holdouts have been corrupted by The Man.

In honor of their rebellion, Something Dada is having OUR time change be exceedingly different from the rest of the country's:
- We're doing it September 28th instead of October 29th
- We're only moving 1/2 an hour instead of a full hour
- And gosh darn it, we fall FORWARD!

So now, our Thursday night shows at the Bassa Vita Lounge below Bottom's Up in Lakewood will have an official starting time of 9:30 PM instead of 9 PM. This way if you have to work REALLY late, you can still make it, or you just have time to enjoy another delicious beverage before the show. Whatever the case, we look forward to seeing you at our brand new time.

The Something Dada Season Premiere

This week begins the rolling out of Season Premieres, and Something Dada is out in front of this trend (as always). You may well remember that last season ended (last Thursday) with a HUGE cliffhanger, leaving the following questions tensely unanswered:

- Will there be a show next week?

Something Dada Beats the Browns

This week, Something Dada's performance will be going against the last Browns pre-season game. You may be debating: watch the Browns? Or go to Dada? Let us help you answer that with the top five reasons to go see Something Dada Thursday night instead of staying home watching the Browns:

5. It's preseason, meaning you will see mainly Browns players who will barely play, if at all, during the regular season. At the Dada show: no scrubs, only stars.
4. We're pro-streakers. (Not professional streakers, but in favor of streakers.) (Well, maybe some of us are professionals, but we're not allowed to talk about it.)

We understand that after taking in a Something Dada show on Thursday night, and with the weather being absolutely perfect, and with the next long weekend being two hard weeks away, you'll want to take Friday off from work. However, work, being work, won't accept ANY of the prior excuses for taking a day off. Ridiculous, right? Right. So, as a public service, Something Dada has prepared a list of excuses you CAN use to get that beloved day off:

- Your otolaryngologist told you that you have excessive cerumen, and you don't want it to spread around the office. Sure, that means your ENT said you have too much ear wax, but you don't want that to spread either, do you?

- Freak snowstorm at your house.

- Your roof sprung a leak, and the guy said he'd be there to patch it sometime between 8 AM and 7 PM.

- Darned if that pack of wild, rabid dogs didn't gather outside your door again, keeping you from getting out.

- Jury duty. Sure, the "trial" you were helping "adjudicate" was American Idol, but darned if that isn't important, too.

Something Dada Wants to Know: What Happened to the Hostess Characters?

It's August, it's hot, and our brains are fried. As such, we got to wondering: what the heck happened to the Hostess dessert characters? Twinkie the Kid, Captain Cupcake, Fruit Pie the Magician, Chauncey Choco-Dile, and Happy Ho Ho. (No, we're not making these up: http://www.x-entertainment.com/articles/0857/) Twinkie the Kid seems to be riding strong, nominated as Advertising Icon of the Year (really, we're not making it up: http://www.twinkies.com/iconoftheyear.asp), but the rest have disappeared from view. Why is this? Is it because they're unbelievably weak, not even showing the creativity of the McCrew (mmmmmm, Mayor McCheese), but rather just putting a hat an legs on the delicious Hostess creations? Or is it simply because the delicious filled goodness that is a Hostess snack sells itself, without the need for silly cartoon characters?

Something Dada - Enhancement-Free Funny

As a follow-up to last week's e-mail, Something Dada would like to offer a complete and total denial, followed by a half-confession, and a rant at the media thinly disguised as an apology.

As you may have heard, Something Dada tested positive for increased levels of performance enhancing funny in our blood stream. Anybody who has seen us on a regular basis knows that we do not have any need for performance enhancing funny. Any enhancement to our performance comes from naturally occurring funny, and we have never injected funny into our bloodstream, taken funny orally, inhaled funny, or sprinkled funny dust on our heads in an effort to enhance our performance.

Something we ate prior to our last performance may have spiked our funny, but we want to tell everyone that we had no idea that it could spike our funny, and in no way was an effort on our part to sidestep the Funny Testing Agency. It is very possible that an angry doorman spiked our drinks with funny the night before.

As such, we would like to apologize to any and all persons who may have overly delicate sensibilities to funny and whom we may have angered in our funniness. All we can offer is our assurance that all funny, past present and future, that comes from a Something Dada performance is purely our own, and generated naturally, much like arsenic.

In an effort to show good faith toward the community, we would like to offer everybody free admission to our next show at the Bassa Vita Lounge, below Bottoms Up in Lakewood, this Thursday at 9 PM. We look forward to seeing you there, and promise to maintain our commitment to enhancement-free performances.

Something Dada Wins the Tour de France

As you may have heard, Something Dada won the Tour de France which ended Sunday. We're really proud, needless to say. We held our own in the mountains, but really turned it on in the speed stages to claim the final yellow jersey. This is really an amazing accomplishment, and we want to say thank you to everyone who helped us, without whom we never could have done it.

Of course, by "won the Tour de France" we mean "know that the race happene and heard that some American guy won it so we thought we could claim the glory for ourselves and maybe people would believe us." If that makes us bad people, so be it, but it also gets people to buy us drinks. Speaking of drinks, and making things up, Something Dada will actually be performing Thursday night at 9 in the Bassa Vita Lounge below Bottom's Up in Lakewood. This is true. Also true is that there will be improv, and that a good time will be had. Not true is that we will be passing around the Nobel Peace Prize we won a while back. (You should come down anyway, because, sure, Mohamed ElBaradei did win the Nobel Peace Prize, but we're pretty sure he isn't nearly as funny as we are.)

Something Dada's Psyched About 7/20/06

Something Dada's next show is on 7/20/06. What an amazing day this is!! Did you know that day where you can take the month, multiply it be three and subtract one to get the day, then divide by 2 and subtract 4 to get the year only happens once in a while? Not very often at ALL! I mean...there's 5/14/03, and 9/26/09, but that's it! Three times in a century! Wow! And if you add up the day, month and year on any of these, it's a multiple of 11. DaVinci code nothin'.

Something Dada vs. Baseball

Major League Baseball's All-Star break seemed a good time to try and get some of you baseball fans to come down and check out Something Dada's hilarious improv. You might not realize it, but Dada and baseball have a lot more in common than you might think:

- Some baseball players are unnaturally large because of steroids. Some Dadas are unnaturally large because of beer and pizza.

- If the Indians' record continues this season, Dada and the Tribe will both have about the same attendance at their performances.

- Baseball players regularly scratch themselves during the game. Dadas really try not to, but sometimes you can't help it.

- Dada shows and Indians defense can both make you laugh.

- You can drink at a baseball game, and you can drink at a Something Dada show, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper at the Dada show.

Something Dada's Guide to Fireworks

It has come to our attention that some of you may be planning to shoot off fireworks this weekend for some reason. If that does happen to be the case, we'd like to let you know about some of the newest and most exciting fireworks available:

The Paris Hilton - sort of wanders about the sky aimlessly, but looks great on film. Very expensive. Do not touch this firework without gloves, as it can make you itch.

The Ryan Seacrest - This firework is very much in demand right now, but is actually completely empty. Has a bright pink flare.

The Cleveland Indian - This shoots up extremely rapidly, but then plunges down to earth even more quickly.

The Ben Roethlisberger - Comes with lots of stickers where it claims to be safe, but will hit you in the face and explode.

The Rush Limbaugh - Makes a lot of noise, but isn't very bright.

Be sure to ask for all of these by name when you're buying fireworks to NOT shoot off in Ohio *winkwink*.

Something Dada's Got World Cup Fever!

Naturally you know that the World Cup starts on Friday in Germany. Something Dada's just as excited as you are. In fact, for the entire month of the World Cup, from Germany's kickoff on June 9th to the United States' victory over Angola in the Cup Final on July 9th (bet it, you'll be rich), Something Dada will be adopting soccer-specific traits to get in the spirit. For example:
- Any time a performer is in a show he or she will earn a "cap"
- The stage will be referred to as the "pitch"
- We will be allowed 3 substitutions per show
- We will use our feet during the entire show
- Any time somebody screws up, we will writhe on the ground in pretend agony, grabbing our ankle
- Regardless of the result of the show, our fans will loot the city afterward
- We will exchange shirts with audience members at the end of the show

Some of these ideas are still under review, but we're pretty sure they're going to catch on. So kick it (get it?) down to the Bassa Vita Lounge beneath Bottoms Up on W. 117th on Thursday night to see our football-inspired hilarity. Something Dada Goes to the Worms

With all this rain coming down, Dada's mind turned to our little squirmy friends who love to gather on wet pavement: worms! These little buggers (well, they're not bugs, but members of the Lumbricidae family) have gotten a bad name over the years, so we thought we'd share with you some interesting facts we dug up (pun intended):

- There are over 2,700 kinds of worms.
- In one acre of land, there can be more than a million earthworms.
- The largest earthworm ever found was in South Africa and measured 22 feet from its nose to the tip of its tail.
- Worms can grow a new tail if it is cut off, but not a new head.
- Worms, though they have no eyes, move away from light and will become paralyzed if exposed to light for too long (approximately one hour).
- Worms are hermaphrodites.

Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Sunday is Mother's Day, and Something Dada wants to help you out. Remember when you were a kid, and you made mom something, and it meant more to her than all the jewelry in the world? That can still do the trick, and here are a few ideas you might want to try:

- A little clay ashtray like the ones you made back in kindergarten. When she reminds you that she still doesn't smoke, say "I know, but I do to deal with all the guilt you've given me."

- A poem where every line starts with the letters M-O-T-H-E-R (or M-O-M if you're feeling lazy) and each letter stands for a medication your therapist has you on to deal with issues relating to your childhood

- A drawing of you carrying a large sack. When she asks about the sack, tell her its "the baggage you gave me that I carry from failed relationship to failed relationship."

Then again, maybe flowers aren't such a bad idea. However, the bestest gift you could ever give any mother is a trip down to the Bassa Vita Lounge on Thursday night to see Something Dada. Admission is free, but she doesn't need to know that. There are drink specials, and we all know how she loosens up a bit when she has a few in her. Something Dada Passes Over the Holidays

Something Dada is aware that this week's Thursday show at the Bassa Vita Lounge coincides with the second Seder of Passover. If you can't make it for this reason, we lift a glass of Manischewitz to you, make the universal drinking-Manischewitz face, and look forward to seeing you next week and weeks beyond. We also know that Easter comes this Sunday, so if you're heading out of town for the Holiday, enjoy the ham and eggs. For those of us who will be around on Thursday, there's tons of things we can be celebrating as well. Such as:
- International Special Librarian's Day (whether this is a special day for librarians or a day for special librarians is unclear)
- National Chad Day (well, National Day in Chad, but if you know a Chad, give him a hug)
- Pi Mai, the Laotian New Year (Be sure to check the date if you're writing any Laotian checks)

In honor of the Turin Olympics and Something Dada's return to the stage at

Something Dada Explains It All To You

Something Dada realizes that since we're no longer at our old West 6th Street
location, you may have questions about what's going on with us. Fortunately,
someone invented FAQs, giving us a nice, easy way to answer your questions,
assuage your concerns, and use the word assuage.

Q: What happened?
A: On January 6th, 2006, the cast of Something Dada showed up at their theater,
excited to do another show. One small problem: the locks on our space had been
changed. Unexpectedly, we were no longer to get into the space we had called
home for ten and a half years. So, after much negotiation, we were finally
allowed into the space, retrieved what we could, and moved it to storage. The
stages had been destroyed, the wall of doors was taken, gallows humor was the
order of the day, but we got what we could and bid farewell to our West 6th
Street theater.

Q: What now?
A: First off, Something Dada is alive and well. We are currently looking for a
space to make our new permanent home, but in the meanwhile we'll be keeping
busy. We are in the process of booking shows around town, and will be sure to
let you know about them.

Q: How am I going to know where Something Dada is performing?
A: We will be sending out regular updates to our e-mail list. If you're
currently not on the Something Dada e-mail list and would like to join, please

Q: What if I want to hire Something Dada to perform?
A: You're in luck! Something Dada continues to be available to hire for private
functions. We have references from numerous satisfied clients, for events

Q: Where is Something Dada going to end up?
A: That's still up in the air. We're currently researching spaces to base our
new theater.

in and turn it into our very own theater with lots of blood, sweat, tears, and
money.

Q: How can I help?
A: Glad you asked! Something Dada is going to be putting in a lot of work to
transform wherever we end up into a true theater. As such, we're going to need
lots of help. We're actively seeking donations of any sort of building
materials that might be helpful in designing and building our new theater (wood,
metal, paint, curtains, you name it). If you or someone you know would be

Q: But I don't have any paint just sitting around waiting to be donated. What

Cabaret Dada Scheduling Alert
